Getting Back Out There with Safe Ridesharing

July 30, 2021 | Rideshare Accidents

As a kid, you were taught never to get into a car with a stranger. Now, with ridesharing options like Uber and Lyft, this is commonplace. These transportation network companies have built safety measures into their apps to benefit drivers and riders alike, but it’s up to you to follow through with them. Here’s how to stay safe while ridesharing.

Ridesharing Tips for Riders

  • Wait inside: Summon a rideshare driver from inside a home or business, and stay inside until the car arrives. The app will tell you when your ride is getting close.
  • Make sure it’s the right car: The ridesharing app gives you the driver’s name, photo, car model, and license plate number. You should also see a reflective Uber or Lyft sticker on the windshield. Crosscheck the information you have with the car and driver that come to pick you up before getting in the vehicle.
  • Ask the driver for verification: Ask your driver who they’re picking up and use the rideshare app’s built-in PIN verification system.
  • Buckle up: Sit in the backseat and securely fasten your seatbelt.
  • Share your plans: Text a friend or family member where you’re going and your estimated arrival time, or share your status through the rideshare app. Tell your driver you’re doing this to discourage any potential criminal activity.
  • Don’t share personal information with the driver: Avoid disclosing your phone number or other contact information.
  • Trust your gut: If you feel unsafe, ask the driver to pull over and drop you off. If they refuse, use the in-app emergency button to call 911.

Ridesharing Tips for Drivers

  • Plan for unpredictable riders: Decide how you’ll handle an unruly, aggressive, or intoxicated rider before one gets into your car.
  • Screen riders: Drivers can rate their passengers in the app. Use discretion when picking up anyone with a rating lower than 4.6.
  • Rate your riders: Help future drivers avoid potential altercations by giving unpleasant riders a low score in the app.
  • End the ride if you feel unsafe: It’s your right to pull over and ask a rider to exit your vehicle if you don’t feel safe. Do so in a populated area if at all possible.
  • Get the right insurance coverage: Driving for Uber or Lyft makes your car a commercial vehicle, meaning you need a different type of insurance coverage when you’re working to avoid having your policy canceled.
  • Drive safely: You may feel the need to make small talk with riders, but pay attention to your surroundings and obey all traffic laws to reduce the risk of an accident.
